Margaritaville at Sea Islander Review: Food, Rooms, Entertainment & Honest Cruise Experience
Travel With Donna • Cruise Review
For travelers seeking a more personalized "human" connection, the main dining room offers a break from the casual self-service of the buffet. While the Margaritaville at Sea Islander ditches traditional assigned seating for a more flexible, "show up when you're ready" approach, the experience remains focused on a more formal, multi-course meal. It is the ideal setting for those who want to slow down and enjoy a gourmet-leaning menu, providing a space where you can request a favorite server to recreate that classic cruise bond throughout your voyage.
The clear star of the food scene onboard was Cheeseburger in Paradise. If you're craving a classic cruise comfort meal, this spot absolutely delivers. The burgers were consistently hot, juicy, and packed with flavor.
What really made the experience stand out was the fixings bar, which allowed guests to fully customize their burgers with a variety of toppings. Whether you prefer a simple cheeseburger or a fully loaded creation, this casual dining venue quickly became a favorite for many guests onboard.
Buffet Dining
The buffet experience had both positives and a few drawbacks.
On the plus side, the buffet was served by staff, which many guests appreciated for both cleanliness and portion control. The dining area itself was spacious and comfortable, offering plenty of booths and tables with enough distance between them that it never felt crowded. One big advantage was that finding a seat was never a problem, which is not always the case on cruise ships.
The food itself was fairly typical buffet fare. Some dishes arrived a bit cooler than expected, and flavors were occasionally on the mild side. However, there was one surprise standout.
🍕 Late-Night Pizza (Until 2 AM!)
The buffet also serves pizza until 2:00 AM, which is fantastic for late-night cravings. And surprisingly, the pizza was really good—arguably even better than the pizza served at Royal Caribbean’s well-known Sorrento’s.
If you're the type of traveler who enjoys a late-night snack after a show or a night at the bar, this option is a big win.
🍦 Ice Cream
Another pleasant surprise onboard was the ice cream. It was rich, creamy, and genuinely delicious—better than what you’ll find on many larger cruise lines.
One improvement that would make the experience even better would be placing quick snacks like cookies or small desserts in additional areas around the ship rather than limiting them to the buffet area.
🍽️ Dining Room Experience
The main dining room experience was somewhat of a mixed bag.
One of the biggest differences from traditional cruise dining is the flexibility. There are no assigned dining times and no requirement to dress formally, which many guests appreciate. You can simply show up when you're ready to eat.
However, because seating is not assigned, guests typically do not have the same waiter each night. That makes it harder to build the kind of personal connection many cruisers enjoy with their dining staff. That said, if you find a table and server you like, you can request them again for future dinners.
Large groups who want to dine together can also make reservations once onboard.
The food itself leaned toward the gourmet side, which may appeal to many travelers, though some dishes didn’t always match the descriptions on the menu. Service was efficient but somewhat transactional—orders were taken quickly, food arrived promptly, but there was little conversation or recommendations from staff.
A few small service details also stood out. Drinks were served in small juice-sized glasses and refills were not offered automatically. Bread service was limited to one small baguette piece rather than a basket with multiple options.
🛏️ Staterooms
The staterooms on the Islander were very comfortable and comparable to rooms found on ships from larger cruise lines like Royal Caribbean.
A few minor improvements could make them even better. The bathroom showers use curtains rather than glass doors, which many modern ships have transitioned away from. There were also no USB ports in the room and only one outlet near the desk area. Closet space was adequate but came with a limited number of hangers.
None of these were deal-breakers, but they are small conveniences many travelers have come to expect on newer ships.
🎭 Entertainment
Entertainment onboard was very good overall, with a solid mix of shows, music, and activities throughout the cruise.
One standout event is the Salute to Heroes show, which honors military members and veterans. Margaritaville at Sea truly goes above and beyond what most cruise lines do to recognize and celebrate those who have served.
One small improvement would be adding more trivia or interactive games on sea days—especially the final sea day, when many guests are looking for additional activities to fill their schedule.
👏 Staff & Crew
The staff onboard truly helped make the cruise memorable.
The cruise director and entertainment team were engaging, funny, and genuinely connected with guests. The room attendant was excellent, keeping the cabin spotless and always making sure everything was taken care of.
Another pleasant surprise was how quickly luggage was delivered to guest cabins after embarkation.
One small thing that felt missing was hearing from the Captain during the cruise. Many travelers enjoy when the Captain makes announcements or addresses guests during the voyage, which helps create a sense of connection to the ship.
🚢 Ship Design & Atmosphere
The overall decor and atmosphere of the ship were outstanding. The design perfectly captures the relaxed Margaritaville vibe inspired by Jimmy Buffett, creating a fun and carefree environment throughout the ship.
The theater was particularly well designed, featuring bench seating with small tables at each seat so guests can easily enjoy drinks during shows. There was also extra space between rows so people could move around without forcing others to stand up.
One thing to note is that the theater floor slopes downward, so guests should take a little extra care when entering or exiting their row.
Shopping onboard was another pleasant surprise, offering a nice selection of merchandise at very reasonable prices.
One improvement that would be helpful would be adding a mobile app or TV system allowing guests to monitor their onboard spending throughout the cruise.
🧳 Embarkation & Debarkation
Embarkation was very organized, but also quite strict. Guests are not allowed to enter the terminal before their assigned check-in time, which could be uncomfortable if arriving early in extreme heat or rain.
Debarkation, however, felt less organized and could benefit from clearer direction and flow to help guests exit the ship more smoothly.
🌴 Final Thoughts: Would I Sail Again?
Absolutely.
The Margaritaville at Sea Islander offers a fun, relaxed cruise experience with great entertainment, comfortable rooms, and some standout food options—especially the burgers, pizza, and ice cream.
It’s not trying to compete with mega-ships packed with attractions, and honestly that’s part of its charm. If you’re looking for a laid-back cruise filled with good vibes and a true Margaritaville spirit, this ship delivers exactly that.
